When Baker Days contacted me and asked if I would like to review one of their Christmas letterbox cakes, I immediately said no. Just kidding, of course I jumped at the chance!! Who doesn’t like cake? And even better, cake that would delivered to my door and put through my letterbox so it is sitting there waiting for me when I got home from work.
Baker Days is a brilliant website that promises to make it easy “to create your own special design of cake. Choose a size and flavour, then add your special message! If you order before 2pm, we can deliver your cake the next working day, virtually anywhere in the UK. All our letterbox cakes come complete with candles and balloons and our large cakes come with cake slicer.”
We were sent the Letterbox Cake, which is described as a “clever little cakes for one or two of you. This small, perfectly proportioned cake is the baby of our family. It’s the thoughtful gift that will totally delight a loved one. This brilliant cake, as it’s name suggests, can arrive through the post, just like a Birthday card” and is priced at £14.99. You can change the flavour for an extra fee, and have it delivered next day as well if you need to!
As we were due to put up our Christmas decorations, we opted for a lovely Christmas themed cake, with a photo of us that was taken at Christmas last year. Unfortunately the cake didn’t arrive in time (not the company’s fault though and a new cake was sent out immediately when we realised the first one hadn’t arrived), and we must have the world’s smallest letterbox as it didn’t fit through our door! But luckily the postman left it in our safe place, so we had no bother having to go and pick it up from the sorting office!
You might wonder how a cake can travel through the post without getting damaged? Well, it is so well packaged, in a great little tin and then in a sturdy cardboard box, that there is no worry about it getting messed up in the delivery process. Our box even came with a cute little cracker and a card, which I thought was a brilliant little touch! Although Alfie was a little bit unsure about the cracker and I couldn’t get him to wear the hat!
The cake comes with a handy little instruction tab about how to get it out of the tin without damaging it. It really was very easy! We got it out of the tin and then opened the plastic bag to reveal a gorgeous little cake. The photo was so clear and crisp, and the message to “the Jones'” was perfect! It was so lovely to receive such a wonderfully personalised item.
Now it was time to tuck in! Despite being small enough to fit through a letterbox, the cake is actually surprisingly big. I put it on a small side plate to cut and it filled most of the plate. It is described as being able to feed 3-4 people, and it would definitely be enough for 4 people to have a small slice with a cup of tea as an afternoon treat! The cake itself was a vanilla sponge cake with a buttercream filling on the bottom and under the icing.
The cake was DELICIOUS! I love a bit of cake, and I’ve had good cake and bad cake, and this cake was GOOOOOOD! Despite being posted, the cake was moist and sweet and the icing was perfect, not hard at all. A small slice was definitely enough though as it was very filling. After I’d had a taste, I gave Alfie some to try.
He loved it! I’m not too strict about sweet treats, so he’s had cake before and enjoyed it, but he loved this cake! Literally shoved it in his face as he couldn’t eat it quick enough – there was no point even getting a plate out as it didn’t stay on it for long!
All in all, we loved this cake. I loved the concept behind being able to pick a cake and send it through the post. It’s perfect for family and friends who live far away. Or perhaps someone who needs a little pick me up but you know you won’t see them for a while – you can just order a lovely cake to be delivered directly to them! Of course the most important thing is how it tastes – and it tastes amazing. Even better, it looks amazing as well.
I’d highly recommend this company for sending a gift that is a little different. There is so much to chose from on their website, you can spend hours picking the perfect design for that special someone (even if that special someone is yourself!!). What are you waiting for – go and get some cake!!
