If you’ve been following my blog from the start, you’ll know Alfie was never a good sleeper. He wasn’t too bad at napping but woke on average every 2 hours until he was about 18 months old. Sometimes it would be up to 4 hours – the only time he slept longer than that was after his jabs and it petrified me so I didn’t sleep!
So I have to say I wasn’t particularly bothered about whether Henry slept or not – I was used to little sleep! However, Henry is actually a a very good sleeper at night. He does wake two to three times, but I would expect that in a baby of his age. The problem we have is his day naps – of which there are none!! I think the biggest problem is he startles easily so wakes himself up.
I used to swaddle him as a newborn and he seemed to love it! As he got bigger, he started to wriggle out my of my muslin swaddle, and I also got a bit lazy and stopped doing it as much. But when I was asked to review a Summer Infant Original Swaddle, I thought this might be the answer to my prayers!
I chose the grey stars swaddle in large for Henry as he was about 11lbs, so nearing the end of the weight limit for the small swaddles. When it arrived and I took it out of the package, I did look at it and think how am I meant to use this??? It looks very odd when you’ve never seen a swaddle before. I read the instructions and thought I’m never going to be able to use this, but actually it was very simple – you literally just wrap them and Velcro and they’re very secure and cosy. I showed Alfie when I’d wrapped him up and said he looked like a caterpillar. Alfie was very alarmed and wondered where Henry’s arms were – “he’s not a caterpillar!!” he cried!
I tried it out firstly for Henry’s nap. I wrapped him up and he looked very happy and smiley – this was a good sign! I then fed him and he fell asleep. He was perfectly content being wrapped up while he fed and it didn’t affect his feeding at all. Now came the real test – could I put him down without waking him up?! And I did! And he slept for over an hour. His usual nap lasts about 20 minutes, so anything over that is a bonus!
I then tried it for overnight sleep and it was fabulous! I did the same thing – wrapped him and then fed him and he went to sleep very well. Of course he woke – he’s 2 months old so I expect him to still be waking for a feed in the night, but he seemed a lot more content and settled back to sleep a lot quicker. I love the swaddle and Henry loves the cosy cuddles!
We were also sent a pack of three large muslin swaddles. These are perfect for the hot weather we’ve been having. I washed these straight away and they are still lovely and soft – perfect for babies delicate skin.
The muslins are so versitile. They can be used as a swaddle, a blanket, a cover for nursing, for wiping up spit ups, and covering baby’s legs in the heat whilst babywearing.
The colours are beautiful! I love the summery mint colour and they are a brilliant unisex option, so would be perfect to buy as a baby shower gift if you don’t know the sex of the baby.
We love both of these products from Summer Infant, and would highly recommend them to anyone with a new baby.
