Alfie’s third birthday has come round so fast! We have done a lot in the year since his last birthday and I can’t believe we are already celebrating him being another year older.
With that in mind, I’ve been searching for the perfect birthday presents for him. I’m on a mission to reduce our toy collection now we have two children, and also to find things that will either last a long time or buy things that are an experience and will create lasting memories for years to come! I’d love more toys that encourage Alfie to use his imagination or get outside in the garden and play. With that in mind, here is my birthday gift guide for a three year old!
Kiddimoto Union Jack Kurve Balance Bike*
A balance bike is the perfect gift for a three year old, and we love this fantastic wooden Union Jack Kurve Balance bike from Kiddimoto, the UK’s original balance bike company base in Cheddar, Somerset.
Not only is the bike gorgeous to look at, but it is fabulous for teaching your toddler to ride a bike. The idea of a balance bike is that they learn to balance before they learn to pedal, as that is the most difficult part of learning to ride a bike.
The bike is extremely well made, with a solid and sturdy wood. It is quite heavy but in a good way – it shows how well made it is and I know this is something that will last! Alfie is very tall for his age, but this was a brilliant size for him and it will definitely last him a while.
If you’re getting your toddler a balance bike, make sure you remember to get a helmet – Kiddimoto do an amazing matching helmet that will make your toddler look the part!
Alfie loves a bag. Be it Henry’s changing bag, Daddy’s gym bag or my clutch bag on an evening out, he loves to carry a bag wherever he goes! This is why a rucksack is the ideal gift for him – he can fill it with all his important belongings (dinosaurs, books, Pom Bears, strawberries…you get the idea!).
This rucksack from Giftpup is a brilliant gift. The deep red colour is so bright I can see him from miles away, and the fact that it can be personalised with his name means it’s ideal for using to take to nursery. It’s a really good size so can fit lots of things in, but isn’t too big for Alfie to carry himself.
The drawstring means it can be done up to keep everything safely inside but Alfie can undo it him The straps are adjustable so can be carried by all ages (even mum or dad when they get fed up of carrying it themselves!) Alfie absolutely loves this bag, he hasn’t put it down since it arrived!
Gruffalo Child theatre trip
We always like to try and buy some kind of experience as a present, so it’s not all just “stuff”. This year we have bought tickets to see The Gruffalo’s Child at the theatre. After a successful trip to see Dinosaur World Live, we thought another trip to the theatre would-be a great idea. It’s not too expensive either so if Alfie doesn’t enjoy it and wants to leave, it’s not the end of the world.
I’ve recently been introduced to the amazing website that is Babipur! They sell all kinds of children’s clothes, toys and items for the home. The great thing about them is all their products are environmentally friendly and ethically made. They are doing their bit to promote living a better life for the planet. I know a lot of people might see this as a bit “hippy” but it is so important to realise how much our disposable lifestyle impacts the world – if not for us, then for our children.
With that in mind, I want to start introducing wooden toys to our children and the perfect starting point is a Grimm’s Rainbow! Not only is it ethically made, it’s a brilliant toy to help children play creatively and learn to use their imagination. It can be stacked, balanced and used in all kinds of play. I can’t wait to see what Alfie comes up with!
Hallmark cards and superhero teddies*
What else do you need for a birthday, than a fab birthday card?! The guys at Hallmark sent me this great selection of birthday cards. There’s one for every kind of superhero in your life! Perfect for any cheeky 3 year old.
We also got sent these Itty Bitty Superhero teddies that Alfie has not put down since they arrived. They’re the perfect size for him to take out with him and a great little toy to start collecting!
Julia Donaldson book collection
Alfie absolutely loves watching The Gruffalo, Room on a Broom and Stickman on tv – he’s always asking to watch them and is enthralled by them when they’re on. I think Room on a Broom is his favourite at the moment, but The Gruffalo is definitely high up on the list! But we don’t have the books, so I decided that we needed to update our bookshelf to include these. I found this brilliant set of all the Julia Donaldson classics – including some that I’ve heard of but never actually read! And they were a complete bargain from The Book People – £11 for the whole set. I can’t wait to give these to Alfie as I really think he will love them.
Craig has always been a big Marvel fan, so it’s inevitable that he wants to pass this down to his boys. Alfie isn’t massively into superheroes, but he knows a few and is getting in to them more as he gets older. So I have put some costumes on his birthday list which he will be so excited to receive! They’re the perfect gift for any hero obsessed child.
The cheapest, simplest gift you could buy, but oh my gosh don’t kids go crazy for a bubble wand! They are the perfect addition to any child’s birthday wish list. I guarantee they will probably be the most played with present that day.
Tuff Spot Tray for Small World Play
I have been wanting to get Alfie a Tuff Spot tray for ages so thought it would be the perfect gift to put on Alfie’s birthday list. The opportunities for play are endless and I love the way it encourages little minds to think outside of the box. I can’t wait to get it in the garden and explore all the different things we can do with it. I particularly love this set up by Mrs Lighty of All Things Spliced (who has kindly let me use her photos).
Chicco Fit n Fun range*
The Chicco Fit n Fun range is another exciting addition to any three year olds wish list. We were sent the Mister Ring to try out and Alfie is a huge fan already. He loves how fun it is, and I love that it helps to develop his hand eye coordination, balance and counting skills as well as testing his patience and competitiveness! The bright colours of the toy just adds to the fun. There are other great toys in this range that test and develop a range of skills perfect for this age group.
We like to have a variety of different gifts on Alfie’s birthday list each year, and these are just some of the types of things we love to include. There is a good mix of large items and smaller items, but every one appeals to a three year old in a different way and there are lots of ideas to suit all budgets!
