To our Alfie Bear on Your Third Birthday,
Friday 10th July, 03.13, 10lbs 3oz, 40 something hours later….
These are numbers, dates and times I will remember forever as it’s what it took to get you, our first born son safely into this world.
I’m sure every parent says it every year, but gosh isn’t time going so fast. It doesn’t seem that long ago I waddled down to town with your auntie LaLa because I was craving strawberry milkshake and had the most unsatisfactory strawberry milkshake of my life. My feet were swollen, we were in the midst of a heatwave, and I just wanted you out! The next day, a routine midwife appointment showed things were not great and you needed to be evicted.
Over 40 hours later you were finally here and 3 years later, we have with the most gorgeous, funny, kind, slightly crazy little boy. We are so lucky to have you in our lives and couldn’t ask for a better son.
This past year has been a difficult one for you. I was pregnant for most of it, and not the best version of myself, and then you became a big brother and it was a testing time for all of us.
You have become the most amazing brother to Henry. After a bit of a shakey start, and after you realised that he was here to stay, you have become so kind and gentle to your brother. Those times that you show how much you love him make the difficult times totally worth it. When you run into our bedroom and the first thing you do is make sure Henry is ok. When you randomly go up to him to give him a kiss and cuddle. When you ask where your best buddy is. When I take Henry out on my own, and you ask Daddy when Henry’s coming home. When you hate going to nursery because you miss your brother. When you know exactly how to make Henry laugh and giggle. When you give his face a little stroke and say goodnight to him. All these times show me what a perfect young boy you have grown into.
You are coming along amazingly at nursery. The things you show me that you have learnt surprise me every day. Your speech is fantastic, and the skills you are learning remind me just how big you are getting. I can’t believe when I write about your next birthday, you’ll only be a few months away from starting big school!
As much you can be a handful, as much as you are boisterous, energetic and seem to have selective hearing, you are kind and thoughtful and have grown up to be a beautiful young man at only three years old. I Iove how cheeky you have become and how hard it can be not to laugh at you when I should be telling you off! I love how bright and engaged you are when we do activities together – painting and baking and enjoying the sunshine in the paddling pool.
I’m sure you are fed up of me taking a million photos every day but I can’t help but document all these amazing moments to remember in years to come. The days are slipping by so quickly, even quicker since Henry came along, and I forget you’re not my baby anymore. You’re a handsome young boy, a big boy who can count to 20, tell me his colours, say please and thank you in the right context and show love and kindness to all your friends.
Happy Third Birthday Alfie Bear. I can’t wait to see what this year brings us.
All our love, always and forever,
Mummy and Daddy
