We recently moved into our new house, which was our third time applying for the Movers Houston help. So you would think we’d be experts by now at what essentials to keep at hand. However, having just moved into the new house and not being able to locate these items, it appears we are not very good movers at all! I’d strongly recommend these 10 Essentials to Pack in a Handy Place:
1. TV Remote
After a long, hard day of moving, we were looking forward to sitting down in front of the TV to watch a bit of crappy TV and chill out! Could we find the remote anywhere?? No! Luckily we could use the buttons on the TV and sky box, but who wants to keep having to get up to do that! (We eventually found it inside the empty nappy bin!!) We still can’t locate the remote for our bedroom TV though – we’ve only been in the house 7 weeks!
2. Clean bedding
After a busy and probably stressful day moving, you’ll probably want to sink into a lovely soft bed as soon as the last box is in! Make sure you have some clean bedding handy after your shower to freshen up!
3. Tea Making Essentials – including tea spoons
If you’re a true Brit, the first thing you’ll want to do when you get in your new home is have a cup of tea! Make sure you have a little box of the essentials: kettle, teabags, sugar, mugs and milk – and don’t forget the tea spoons like we did!
Moving house is a dirty job, so no doubt once the movers have gone home and you’re left in your new home, the first thing you want to do is have a shower to get rid of the days grime! Make sure you have some towels and clean clothes handy so you can clean up.
5. Stair gate pieces
When we took the stair gate down, I made sure that all the pieces were put together in a bag, and it was placed somewhere safe so we could put it up immediately when we moved in. Could I remember where that safe place was?? No! So we ended up having to have Alfie in our bed for the first 3 nights as it wasn’t safe for him to be in his bedroom in case he got up in the night and fell down the stairs! We eventually found the bits in a box in the kitchen (which I’m pretty sure I asked my husband to look in on the first night…)
What better way to get a good night’s sleep on your first night in your new home than by having a lovely pair of clean fresh pjs on. No-one wants to be rummaging in boxes after a long day trying to find something to wear to bed! Keep your bedding, towels and pjs together and then you can have a hot shower, put your pjs on and climb into your fresh, clean bed.
7. Cutlery for dinner
If you’ve actually bothered to cook, you’re going to need something to eat that dinner with! We did spaghetti bolognese as it’s kind of a tradition – it’s the first meal we’ve had in every house we’ve moved to, so we couldn’t possibly have anything else. We almost had to eat it with our hands though as we didn’t know which box the cutlery was in. Although a better suggestion might have been to get a takeaway!!
8. Phone charger
You will probably have been on the phone all day, making phone calls to the removal men to see where they were, or calling your husband to find out when he’d be back from the dump run. Or, if you’re like me, taking photos and documenting your day on social media!! So at the end of the day, you’ll need your phone charger to fill up that battery again, ready to photo your lovely new house! I kept mine in my handbag in the car so it was easily accessible.
9. Toilet roll
This one’s pretty self explanatory – you don’t want to be left short on the loo!
What better way to celebrate the new chapter in your life than with a bottle of champagne! We were given quite a few bottles as moving in gifts, so we had the pick of the bunch – cheers!
So there we have it – 10 essentials to pack in a handy place for moving day. If we ever move again (which we won’t, I’m done!) I will make sure I follow my own advice and get a box organised with all this stuff in advance so we’re not scrabbling around on the day trying to find everything! Now, where IS that TV remote…
