When we bought our house 9 months ago, we didn’t factor in that we would also be having a newborn in 9 months time! So we had some pretty big plans for redecorating that have all been put to the side whilst we save a bit of money and get used to being a family of 4. We did however decide that as I’d be seeing a lot of our bedroom during the night feeds, I wanted something that was comfortable and cosy but suitable for a newborn so we needed a bedroom makeover!
Furniture
We already had a decent bed, so the only furniture we needed was a wardrobe and chest of drawers. Unfortunately the built in wardrobe houses the boiler which meant we had to sacrifice a fair bit of space for a large enough wardrobe. Because of this, we opted to get a tall chest of drawers and get rid of my dressing table (sob). We went for white furniture as I think it gives a fresher feel.
Colour Scheme
Deciding on what colours to go for was pretty hard. The bedroom was originally grey with a red feature wall (which in my opinion was hideous!!). I wanted a grey and duck egg blue scheme, but hubby wasn’t having it! So we just went with tones of grey and silver. I love the wallpaper we chose from The Range and the paint was a perfect match. Knowing we’d soon have two boisterous boys, we went for Wilko’s Durable paint in the hope we can ward of marks and scuffs.
Newborn Friendly
We had to rearrange the furniture slightly in order to fit in the newborn bedside crib for the baby. We knew that we would need enough space for the crib without it being too cramped. The bonus is once we remove the crib, there will be enough space for a dressing table for me! We’ve also used a shelf in our wardrobe for baby supplies, so we can do nappy changes and sick mop ups in the middle of the night without too much fuss!
Accessories
I’ve started putting a few accessories out, like a nice candle and vase for when I buy flowers, but I need to print off some family photos to add to the frames we have. Then we have a few more finishing touches to do. We got some lovely curtains for Christmas, but I’d like some new matching bedding as we only have one set at the moment that compliments the room. We currently have a boring light shade but I’d love some crystal ceiling lights and a floor lamp for the corner of the room – it will save us having to get out of bed to turn the light off! I also want some canvases for the wall, but I might wait until the baby is out of our room as we’ll probably rearrange the furniture again!
The results
Our main aim was to create a stylish but cosy room for Craig and I, but one that was suitable for a newborn. We have a fair amount of storage now, with anything unsightly or potentially child unfriendly shut away. We’ve also managed to create a space that is suitable for the baby but can easily be adapted back to an adult only room when the time comes with little effort and expense!
