My husband reached the grand old age of 29 last week, so to celebrate we thought we’d go out for a nice lunch. As it happened, we were invited to review the fixed price lunch menu at Middletons Steakhouse & Grill in Colchester the day after his birthday, so it was the perfect opportunity for us to get some good food in celebration!
We don’t live too far from Colchester, but it’s not somewhere we visit often other than to go to the zoo, so I’d not heard of this restaurant before. I looked it up on the internet before hand and thought it looked really nice. The website was easy to use so I could browse the menu before our meal – something I always like to do when I’m going out to eat!
We arrived and were greeted by our very friendly waiter, Will. Honestly, he was such a nice guy, couldn’t do more to help us but without being too in your face and annoying. Plus he was great with Alfie which we always appreciate when we go out – just saying hello and interacting a little can make all the difference to a little toddler. The table was all set up and ready to go. Alfie had a high chair (an IKEA one which is always a bonus as I know he’ll fit easy-ish and not get stuck ?) and a colouring sheet and crayons already in his place. The one thing I really liked was they gave him his own plastic cup and smaller cutlery. I hate it when restaurants serve kids drinks in glasses – it’s just a recipe for disaster! I had also forgotten his drinks bottle, so I was pleased he had his own cup he could use without too much supervision from us (he did still manage to knock it over, but that’s nothing new).
The children’s menu is displayed on the colouring sheet, so whilst Alfie has busy colouring in his superhero, we could pick his food for him. I asked him what he wanted and he decided on garlic bread strips for starter and a burger for his main.
Craig and I then chose our meals from the fixed price lunch menu. At £7.95 for one course, £8.95 for two and £9.95 for three courses, there’s something to suit everyone’s budget, but to be honest for the extra £2, you may as well have three courses! I think the three course option is exceptional value. There are 5 choices for starter, main and dessert. I went for ham and leek croquettes (although it would have been pate if I wasn’t pregnant!) And Craig went for garlic mushrooms. We both then chose a cheeseburger for our main.
Alfie’s starter came out first which I thought was handy as it meant that I could cut it up and sort him out before my food came out so I actually got to eat a hot meal! Unfortunately it did mean that Alfie finished his food first and so wanted to share mine! My croquettes were absolutely delicious, I could have eaten 10 of them! Alfie seemed to enjoy them too (as well as eating the mustard afterwards with just a spoon!!!) Craig said his garlic mushrooms were also delicious and very filling.
We then had our mains. Again, Alfie’s was brought out first so I could cut it all up and he started eating before our meals came out. When we were initially brought out our meals, they look pretty basic. We had a cheeseburger each with a pot of fries. It’s not fancy or over the top, but to be honest, for less that £10, it really doesn’t matter. I am not someone who eats all the “garnish” on the side anyway, and the portions were a great size – I couldn’t eat all of mine and Craig was so stuffed after his that he couldn’t finish mine either which is very unusual for him! The burger was beautiful – it was warm and could have been a tad hotter for my liking, but it was juicy and not dry and the cheese was melted on top. I always have my burgers plain as I don’t like sauce but Craig had the full works and his burger was stuffed full! The fries were also delicious – hot and crisp and so many of them! We both really enjoyed our meals.
Alfie’s food also looked delicious. He tucked in to his burger, but the portion was very big considering he had a “little kids” meal and unfortunately didn’t manage to eat it all. He dove straight in to his fries though and had no problem eating those (and some of Mummy’s!).
I was really looking forward to tucking in to the dessert menu, but as soon as we had been given the menus back to pick something, Alfie had a mini meltdown. He had been really good up to this point, but as anyone with a 2 year old knows, their attention span isn’t great and asking them to sit down for over an hour is going to be a bit hit or miss. Once he started running away and throwing his leftover burger at the table next to us, we decided it was time to make a swift exit! I was gutted we didn’t get to have dessert as it looked so good!
Thank you so much to Middleton Steakhouse & Grill Colchester for inviting to enjoy a lovely meal. We would highly recommend this restaurant for a lovely family meal. We shall be back!
