When decorating Alfie’s nursery, I knew exactly what I wanted to do, and it was all done and dusted by the time I was 6 months pregnant. When deciding what to do with Henry’s nursery, it too me a LOT longer to firstly decide what to do, and secondly actually get around to doing it! Decorating the nursery was one job I just kept putting off.
I had various ideas of what I wanted, but wanted to wait until after our 20 week scan so I knew if we were having a boy or a girl. I was so convinced we were having a girl that my Pinterest boards are filled with gorgeous nursery ideas in peach and gold. So when it was revealed we were having a boy, I was pretty stumped what to do! I knew I wanted something colourful rather than a typical “boys” room as it’s likely this room will be a playroom when the boys are older if they decide to share a bedroom.
I then ignored all my inspiration and decided I would loosely base the theme on Elmer the Elephant! He’s colourful and fun and I love the sentiment behind the story. I decided I would do a feature wall of bright coloured blocks, like Elmer. I worked out how I would do it, and bought an Elmer toy and some gorgeous Elmer baby clothes for inspiration.
Unfortunately it got closer and closer to Christmas and I realised I just wasn’t going to have time to do what I wanted in the nursery. The feature wall was going to be time consuming and considering I was 8 months pregnant, climbing up and down a ladder to paint probably wasn’t wise. So I started hunting for some wallpaper instead. This became quite stressful as I had an idea in my head what I wanted and couldn’t find anything to match (that was in budget anyway). I found a few I liked and asked Craig to make the final decision as I was fed up of making decisions! Right up until it was on the wall, I was a bit nervous about if it would work. Well, I needn’t have worried. It looks amazing!!
We painted the other three walls white and decided to stick with white furniture and accessorise with bright colours. We had the furniture from Alfie’s nursery – a white chest of drawers from Ikea and a cot from Mamas and Papas – plus my nursing chair. We then used the bright green lampshade that was in Alfie’s nursery and have an orange blind that needs putting up.
Now we just need to add some finishing touches. There is a beautiful clear space above the chest of drawers/changing table that would be perfect for some photos. We got some fab pictures from our newborn shoot (more about that in an upcoming blog post!) so it would be amazing to get some prints, like these from Hello Canvas.
I’d also like to create a little book corner by the nursing chair, with coloured shelves on the wall. When I eventually get rid of the nursing chair, we will probably put Alfie’s teepee in the room, so it would create a perfect little reading snug. We have a rug that would look pretty good in there too.
I feel like the room is lacking a little something at the moment, but it’s still not finished so I’m hoping once it’s done, it will look amazingly perfect!
What theme did you go for in your little one’s nursery?
