Today has been a pretty momentous day for us. Today was the day we finally completed on our first home together. We are now officially home owners!
Now, of course this isn’t the first house we’ve lived in together. We moved into a rented house when we were 21, a lovely 3 bed property in a town that was in between my parents and Craig’s parents. We were full of lots of plans and had no intention really of buying a house. We were happy to rent and found a house that suited our needs – something we could have a family in and a place we could make our home.
It didn’t exactly turn out like that and we quickly became frustrated that we couldn’t do what we wanted with the house. We became aware of so many problems with the house that it became a nightmare to live in. So we began to discuss buying our own property.
Then Craig went and proposed, and of course I wanted to get married straight away. Whilst we didn’t have an extravagant wedding, we used most of our savings so had to re-evaluate what we were doing. We decided to move to a smaller flat to save money.
So we occupied house number 2. We were doing really well with our saving until my broodiness overcame me one day and we decided that we would start trying for a baby. We had saved a lot of money and were nearly ready to move. However, we didn’t expect to get pregnant so quickly, and obviously we needed to fund a baby and everything that entails, as well as my maternity leave. So this pushed our plans a bit further back.
However, six and a half years later, we did it.
We’ve bloody done it.
A lot of hard work, a lot of sacrifices, and a little bit of luck and good timing has secured us a wonderful family home.
It’s bigger, it has a garden, it’s in a lovely area, but most importantly – it’s ours.
I loved our first house because it was our first house and it’s where we got married.
I loved our second house because it enabled us to save and it’s where we had Alfie.
But I’ll love this house the most because it’s ours.
Our first home.
