This update seems to have been a long time coming! I feel like I was writing updates every week for ages but this one seems to have taken a long time to come around.
I am 24 weeks today – creeping closer to the third trimester!
Days Till Due Date
Estimated Size of Baby
Baby is the size of an a cantaloupe! They are 11.8 inches long and 1.3 pounds.
My Weight Gain
Well my weight gain seems to have either slowed down, or my last weigh in was wrong. I haven’t gained anymore weight, so still 13lbs in total.
Symptoms So Far
In my last update I write about feeling shakey and like I had low blood sugar. I made more of a conscious effort to drink more water and cut out the tea and I feel miles better! However, I’ve just been to see the nurse this morning about some horrible pain in my lower back/leg and it seems I have sciatica. I’ve been referred to physio so hopefully I won’t have to wait too long for an appointment and they can give me some tips on how to handle it. Some days I can barely walk it’s so painful and I think it doesn’t help I do a desk job so I’m sitting down all day and I have a two year old that I carry around! If anyone has suffered from this, please send your tips my way!
Since my last update I’ve only had one appointment with my consultant to discuss my need to take aspirin. He prescribed me a dose of “baby aspirin” which can help prevent pre-eclampsia. We also had a bit of chat about my decision to have a vbac, which worried me a little but I’m feeling much better about it now. He also booked in my growth scans. My next appointment is at 26 weeks with the midwife.
Still nothing to report by way of cravings or Aversions!
I am still feeling pretty big for how far along I am, and lots of people at work have asked me when I’m leaving which makes me wonder if they think I’m further along than I am! I’ve also had a lot of “you’re looking very pregnant now” remarks so bump has well and truly popped. I don’t mind the comments though, no-one means it horribly, it’s just a comment. I’ve also been told that my bump is very low. I actually feel like my bump with Alfie was lower, but comparing photos I don’t think it was.
Any Stretch Marks?
No new ones that I’ve noticed, lots of old ones starting to reappear.
YES!! I’m so pleased I can finally report some movements. I had my first little pops at around 22 weeks and they’ve been getting gradually stronger since then. I can now feel definite kicks although they’re not very regular and can’t be felt from the outside just yet. I remember I was 25 weeks with Alfie before getting the big kicks so hopefully I’m not too far off.
What I’ve Been Struggling With
Back and leg pain, which I now know is sciatica. Also not being able to run around after Alfie as much and feeling horrible when I have to say I can’t do something because I’m in pain or tired or physically unable to!
What I’ve Been Surprised About
The realisation that I don’t enjoy being pregnant. I feel awful for saying that, especially as I always imagined I would love being pregnant but I really don’t. I love my bump getting bigger and now I’m starting to feel kicks and movements, it’s definitely more enjoyable. But I’m not the “earth mother” I thought I would be which makes me a bit sad. However, I do love the newborn stage, which lots of people hate!
Difference to First Pregnancy
Although I feel “better” in myself, I’ve had less tiredness (surprisingly) and sickness, but more physical aches and pains. I think I definitely just “get on” with it more in this pregnancy whereas I was a bit precious in my first one (joys of being a mother!)
My next midwife appointment is in 2 weeks, and then I have a flurry of appointments in November, including my Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) to test for gestational diabetes, my anti-D injection and my first growth scan! So my next update is going to be jam packed with what’s been happening.
